 Area Chairperson

As Panel 58 Chairperson, it is a privilege to serve you and the Mid Southern California Area. Should you have any questions or require information on Area Meetings, Area Events, or the Area Structure, contact me or my fellow Area Officers at any time at the email addresses provided on this website.

The Chairpersons responsibilities are according to the Guidelines of the MSCA are the following :

a) Conduct all Area Assembly and Area Service Committee meetings, prepare and have published  meeting agenda, appoint ad hoc committees with the approval of the Executive Committee to be affirmed at the next Assembly, and in general perform the duties of the administrative officer of the Assembly.

b) Responsible for a healthy Area structure and, whenever a District is having difficulty, the Area Chair should be available to assist in restoring it to good working order.

I stand ready to assist you in any way that I can both as one of your Area Officers and as a proud member of Area 09. I am available to attend your District Meetings and look forward to carrying the message of how the Area can support the Districts in maintaining and sustaining an effective service structure for our Groups and their RSG's/GSR's.

It is my hope that together we can increase RSG/GSR participation at Area Assemblies by 50 % over the term of this panel, encourage communication between all our Districts , their MCD's and DCMC's, while building stronger connections between our Districts and the Area Officers, thereby better serving the needs of our Districts and our fellowship .

I look forward to participating in the process of providing an exchange of information which will assure a truly "informed Group Conscience" and better prepare our Panel 58 Delegate for his duties at the Conference.

Among your current trusted servants, RSG's/GSR's and District Officers, are future Area Standing Committee Chairs, Area Officers, and future Delegates to the General Service Conference. I encourage and invite you to seek the fullest possible experience of our "Third Legacy" .

April 2009 will mark Area 09's 50th Year of participation in the General Service Conference, and the 51st Anniversary of being named a Delegate Area. As your Area Chairperson, it has been my pleasure to call the formation of an Ad Hoc Committee to plan events for the celebration of this milestone of service. All members of Area 09 are invited to participate as members of this committee; if you would like to serve or have any questions, email or contact me the next Area Meeting.

Young People’s Video Project“ - Carrying the message” into the 21st Century - through personal digital/video media

In 2005, a questionnaire was distributed through the Area Service Structures targeting Young People’s Groups and Committees asking for evaluation and input on the then current videos “Young People and AA” and “A.A.: Rap With Us”.  The response from that survey was that the 1980’s videos included music; clothing, dance and language which were outdated and not effective in helping young people achieve identification with the fellowship of today.

The 2006 General Service Conference approved an advisory action recommending that the outdated videos “Young People and AA” and “A.A.: Rap With Us” be replaced.

In January of 2007, the Trustees Committee on Public Information recommended that one possible solution allowing frequent updating of videos might be the use of video submissions by younger members using video/digital technology (similar to personalized “U-Tube” or “My-Space” videos).

It is my good and great pleasure to announce that as of April 2008 these personal videos are now being requested from within the fellowship, and the Young People’s Video Project (YPV) is actively seeking submissions from young people with the widest possible diversity range, to be compiled into videos of 15-20 minutes in length to carry AA’s message to schools, college campuses, and other audiences of young people everywhere.  Content is encouraged which includes sharing on young people’s experience with the Twelve Steps, the Twelve Traditions, Service in A.A., the Home Group, Sponsorship, Surrender, Gratitude, Living Sober at a young age, or any topic relevant to those who still suffer.

If you are a young man or woman enthusiastic about your sobriety and the tools with which you maintain it; have a sense of adventure; and would like to be a pioneer in this ground breaking piece of A.A.’s future, you may be encouraged to accept this challenge to become a pioneer videographer of your own recovery. Be creative! (Individual videos should be 3 to 5 minutes; music and animation are encouraged, special effects welcome.)

As the panel 58 Chairperson, by the end of this summer I would like to see 25 submissions accepted from Area 09, which is the home of many of the finest and most active young people in A.A. today.  I would also like permission to use some of these submissions in our Area 09 Video Project for our 50th Anniversary as part of the General Service Structure in 2009.

Guidelines for Anonymity, dress codes, filming tips and requirements for use of sound or animated material used in videos are available on the MSC Area 09 website. You may contact me directly through the Website email or contact the Public Information Desk at GSO if you have any questions or require additional information regarding this project.  Let it be known that in Area 09, this is how we roll….“Lights; Camera; Action, and more Action”.  Guidelines
